Between Heaven and Hell: 12 Films Featuring Unusual Afterlives

Though varied, most entries on this list follow a theme exemplified in Albert Brooks’ Defending Your Life — reconciling past sins while trying to obtain eternal justice. Selections such as Between Two Worlds date back to the 1940s, while Tim Burton makes one of two appearances on the list with his 2005 film, Corpse Bride. Interestingly, there’s far more material here about Limbo than the two more permanent soul harbors, perhaps because that gray area is most attractive for fictionists.
